Bare-throated Tiger-Heron, Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge, La Union Honduras

My daughter Sally spotted this Bare-throated Tiger-Heron as we were motoring down a channel at Cuero y Salada Wildlife Refuge in Honduras during out visit there last week. We approached and the boatman killed the engine well out and let us drift in. He judged the current perfectly, and the bird stayed remarkably calm as we drifted closer and closer. Eventually we bumped against the log the heron had climbed up on for refuge and he flew up to a perch in tree above us, still not more than 20 feet from our boat. A very special encounter indeed, and typical of the photo ops we got all week during the first Point and Shoot Photo adventure in Honduras. Our guide Elmer Escoto of the Lodge at Pico Bonito and Emerald Birding got us on an amazing variety of wildlife. It was a trip to remember. (And plans are in the works already for next years Photo adventure in Honduras.)
